A new handheld device able to image children’s retinas in high resolution could make it much easier to detect vision-related issues early.
While retina exams are common for adults, they are often difficult to perform on young children due to their lack of ability to focus for the time it takes to complete the exam. As an alternative, the team from Duke University created a handheld probe that is able to visualize the individual cells in the parafoveal photoreceptor structure in children as young as fourteen months old. The device is easy to hold over the child’s eye (while the child is under anesthesia), and the lack of adaptive optics keeps the device compact and lightweight.
