Hiding Medicines in DNA Origami

Hiding Medicines in DNA Origami
Mar-01-16
Researchers have used a technique called ‘DNA origami’ to disguise a cancer medication and sneak it past the cell’s defenses.

Researchers have been investigating DNA origami for some time as a new option for drug delivery. In this case, the team shrouded the medication daunorubicin by wrapping small bits of the compound inside DNA nanostructures that look somewhat like an elongated cinder block. This shape maximizes the surface area that carries the drug, and allows even more of the drug to enter the cell and—in this case—prevent replication.

The DNA origami technique could have applications in other drugs as well, and offer a solution to drug-resistance.
