Hydrogel Smart Bandage Dispenses Medicine as Needed

Hydrogel Smart Bandage Dispenses Medicine as Needed
Dec-09-15
MIT engineers have developed a high-tech wound dressing able to sense the temperature of the skin and release medication as needed.

The bandage is made from a specially designed hydrogel that has been embedded with evenly spaced temperature sensors, drug reservoirs holding different types of medications, and the necessary electronics. When the sensors detect an unusual increase in temperature, the system automatically chooses the correct drug and dispenses it through tiny channels in the hydrogel to be released steadily onto the wound over time.

Beyond its applications as a wound dressing, the team believes the hydrogel could also be used to transport and sustain electronics inside the body, such as glucose sensors.
