Implant Stimulates Spinal Healing

Implant Stimulates Spinal Healing
Sep-28-19
An implantable spinal nerve stimulator could speed the recovery of paralyzed body parts.

The stimulator was developed by a team at MIT to help treat traumatic peripheral nerve injury, which causes paralysis when a nerve connecting a body part to the spinal cord is damaged. The implant encourages healing by delivering continuous electric pulses that stimulate the nerves and potentially reduce the amount of physical therapy needed. The implant stimulation can be controlled via Bluetooth and a paired iPhone. Though the technology is a ways out from human use, it has proven promising in tests on lab rats.
