Ion Pump Delivers the Body's Own Pain Reliever

Ion Pump Delivers the Body's Own Pain Reliever
May-16-15
An implantable ion pump able to alleviate pain using the body's own methods could provide relief to patients suffering from chronic nerve pain.

Created by teams from Linköping University (LiU) and Karolinska Institutet (KI), the ion pump has been compared to a pacemaker, except its function is to alleviate pain. The device is designed to be implanted next to the spinal cord, where it will deliver the neurotransmitter γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) as needed to the exact location where the nerve contacts the spine. The GABA neurotransmitter is produced naturally by the body as a pain reliever, and will keep the pain impulses from reaching the brain.
