The Jellyfish Barge, a solar-powered floating greenhouse, was created to offer a solution to the reducing amounts of farmland across the world.
The barge, designed by a team from PNAT, consists of a 750-square-foot base set on top of an array of recycled plastic drums. Built to be self-sustaining, the Jellyfish Barge uses solar energy to purify salt, brackish or even polluted water, and the crops are grown hydroponically. Its modular setup allows it to be easily expanded, growing from its original capacity of enough food for two families to enough to feed a community.
As sea levels rise, more engineers will be looking for ways to increase our living and food-production areas.
