The UK-based Kite Power Solutions has developed an innovative method of generating power by flying kites.
The kite system generates power by operating in a pumping cycle that creates two reciprocating phases. One kite is flown in a looping, circular path similar to a turbine blade. When the kite reaches a speed of over 100 mph (possible in a 20 mph wind), it will exert enough force on the tether line to spool out from a drum attached to a generator. Once the kite is fully extended, the pitch of its wing is altered to allow the kite to fly back to the starting point. The system is arranged so that two kites are flying at the same time, allowing one to be generating energy while the other is being retracted.
The team believes the system could be of particular use in remote and developing areas, where transport is difficult.
