Lead-Free Brass Alloy

Lead-Free Brass Alloy
Dec-01-18
A new lead-free brass alloy called bright brass could help lower the risks of contaminated water.

Lead, which is commonly used in plumbing brass, aids in machining and creating a watertight seal—but it can also leach into the water supply. To eliminate this danger while retaining the sealing and lubrication benefits, the team from Australia’s University of New South Wales created a new form of brass by replacing the lead in the brass with an undisclosed, non-toxic material. This material gives the ‘bright brass’ the same lubricating and machining qualities without posing a risk to humans, and is cost-competitive to traditional brass.

The spinoff company Advanced Alloy Holdings is now working to bring the product to market.
