Low-Cost Device Stops Postpartum Hemorrhage

Low-Cost Device Stops Postpartum Hemorrhage
May-08-15
A new, low cost device called the Uterine Balloon Tamponade could save the lives of hundreds of woman in rural and developing countries.

The UBT was created by a team from the Cambridge Design Partnership to help stop postpartum hemorrhage—the severe bleeding that can occur after childbirth. The device can be used with very little training, and includes marks to indicate the correct insertion. Once in place, the blood-stanching balloon can be inflated to the correct size by lifting a bag filled with liquid to different heights also indicated by markings—letting gravity inflate the balloon.
