Low-Cost Smart Patch Pump for Diabetics

Low-Cost Smart Patch Pump for Diabetics
Feb-05-15
The small and inexpensive wireless insulin pump developed by TouchéMedical could provide more people with a safer way to regulate their insulin doses.

Developed by a father and son team with the goal of creating a more affordable and smarter patch pump, the device features a disposable cartridge and a reusable core that holds the pump and electronics. A key design element is the unit's circular, rotating syringe, which allows the pump to deliver more accurate dosages—particularly important when treating children, and the reusable core keeps the device's costs low. The pump is also equipped with Bluetooth and a fall sensor (an SMS alert is sent to assigned contacts in case of mishap), and physicians can track their patients' dosage use remotely.

The team hopes to first market the pump to people with Parkinson's disease as a replacement for the bulky units in use today.
