Low-Power Chips Could Let Robots Swarm Longer

Low-Power Chips Could Let Robots Swarm Longer
Mar-10-19
New hybrid power chips inspired by the brain could allow small robots to collaborate and swarm for an extended period of time.

Developed by a team from the Georgia Institute of Technology, the low-power chips rely on a hybrid, digital-analog time processor that encodes information via the pulse-width of signals. This network setup allows for model-based programming as well as collaborative learning, enabling the bots to learn about their environment and move through it autonomously.

The new application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) saves enough power to allow the robots to function together in a swarm for hours instead of minutes. According to Arijit Raychowdhury, “There is a huge demand for very small, but capable robots that do not require infrastructure."
