A new nanoparticle material that can be melted to release a cargo of drugs offers a new way to deliver medications within the body.
Developed by a team at the Technion-Israel University, the material is made up of gold nanoshells embedded within a polymer that will melt when energy from a near-infrared laser is applied to it. The NIR light can penetrate deep into the body, and the materials can be made with different melting points for specific applications.
Currently, the team is working to develop the project further, including ensuring the material is capable of carrying drugs.
