Microneedle Skin Patch Offers Pain-Free Glucose Monitoring

Microneedle Skin Patch Offers Pain-Free Glucose Monitoring
Jan-06-19
A new microneedle skin patch offers continuous glucose monitoring with less discomfort and greater accuracy.

Developed by the team at KTH, the microneedle patch is equipped with a tiny silicon microneedle one-fiftieth the length of current continuous glucose monitoring systems, which will not penetrate far enough to reach nerve receptors. Once in place, the hollow needle draws the interstitial fluid into the patch, where a three-electrode enzymatic sensor determines the glucose content with high accuracy within about ten minutes of the sample being taken.

The team is working to perfect the patch, which still requires occasional finger pricks to ensure it is calibrated properly.
