An innovative robot that grows like a plant can make its way through confined areas to grasp and lift a heavy load.
Developed by a team from MIT to solve the ‘last food problem,’ the robot features an arm much like a bicycle chain that extends along 3D-printed interlocking blocks to take form. The robot’s gearbox (or growing point) pulls in the loose chain, where the gears then lock the units together to form a rigid structure. The growing robot can support a weight up to one pound, which is more than other soft and flexible robots have been able to manage.
