MXene Conductive Clay Could Reshape Batteries

MXene, a clay-like material able to conduct and store energy, could one day see us shaping custom electrodes as easily as rolling out cookie dough.

MXene is made of two-dimensional titanium dioxide and was first discovered in 2011. That version, however, was stiff and somewhat crude compared to the version created by the team (in a "happy accident") at Drexel University. The new version is hydrophilic, which makes it malleable enough to form into almost any shape. And while hydrophilic materials generally do not make good conductors, the updated version of MXene is able to conduct an electrical charge as effectively as metals and hold that charge for three times longer than the older version.

The material could have a wide range of uses, including being thinned enough to function as a conductive paint able to dry in just minutes.
