A new nano-coating developed by a team from Rice University could replace the copper braid and make coaxial cables up to 50 percent lighter.
The tin-coated copper metal braid currently used in coaxial cables to both transmit the signal and protect the cable from electromagnetic interference is also the heaviest component of the cable. As a lightweight alternative, the nanotube-based outer conductor from the Rice University team is only the width of a human hair, yet is able to meet military-grade standards for shielding while also withstanding 10,000 bending cycles with no degradation in performance.
