New App Gives Smartphones Gesture Control

New App Gives Smartphones Gesture Control
Oct-10-14
Researchers have developed an app that works with a smartphone's camera to give existing devices gesture recognition.

The app, created by a team from ETH Zurich, works by comparing the shape of the user's hand to a library of stored gestures. For example, a gun-shape may open a new browser winder, while spreading the fingers wide will turn the page of a book. Because the system works with the smartphone's camera—typically on the back of the device—the gestures must be performed behind the device, which could be a bit awkward at first.

Currently the app can recognize six gestures, and the team has plans to expand that number.
