Non-Toxic Soft Sensor

Dec-22-18
A non-toxic, wearable soft strain sensor could offer a safer way to monitor hand motion and grasp.

The sensor was developed by a team from Harvard University, and features a newly developed, highly conductive liquid as safe as a drop of salt water. The liquid is made up of glycerol and potassium iodide, which react when mixed to form a conductive liquid that remains stable throughout a wide range of humidity levels and temperatures. Because the liquid is non-toxic, the sensors are ideal for use with children, replacing a glove with a safe, silicon-rubber sensor that can be worn on a single finger.
