Old Tires Bridge Concrete Cracks

Old Tires Bridge Concrete Cracks
Jun-14-17
Old tires may find a new use as a way of making concrete stronger.

While recycled tires have been used for some time in asphalt, the new technique from the team at the University of British Columbia uses old tires to make concrete more resilient. The method involves adding polymer fibers from old tires to the concrete mix, where the elastic fibers will bridge tiny cracks as they form and help keep them from growing larger. In tests, the fiber-reinforced concrete reduced crack formation by over 90 percent in comparison to regular concrete.
