Now under funding by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Omni Processor machine uses solid waste to create both electricity and drinking water.
The machine is relatively small, only 75 feet long by 26 feet across, but it can process 14 tons of waste each day—enough to process the sewage of 100,000 people. After the sewage waste has been loaded into the machine, it flows into large drying tubes that boil the sludge and capture the resulting water vapor. This vapor is then processed to make it safe to drink.
The now-solid waste is then burned in an incinerator to create steam that powers a generator and creates electricity for the machine.
