Power Harvesting Shoe

Power Harvesting Shoe
Jan-16-15
A power-harvesting shoe that harnesses energy from walking was inspired by research into a self-lacing shoe for the elderly.

The shoe features two separate components that harness power by taking advantage of the motion between magnets and coils. A shock harvester generates electricity from the impact of the heel on the ground, and a swing harvester generates power from the swinging motion as the foot moves into each step. Although the shoe does not generate enough energy to power a smartphone, it can power small sensors and transmitters.

The power-harnessing shoe was born out the of the original project of creating a self-lacing shoe able to open and lace itself up automatically using the power created by the on-board generators.
