Pediatric Heart Valve Grows with the Child

Pediatric Heart Valve Grows with the Child
Dec-26-17
A replacement heart valve that grows with the child could help reduce the need for follow-up surgeries.

Developed by a team from Draper Lab, the pediatric heart valve is able to expand to over twice its original diameter, growing with the patient from infancy to an age of six years. According to Dr. Sitaram Emani, the automatic expansion eliminates “at least one surgical or invasive procedure,” which in turn reduces costs and stress on the young patient.

A prototype of the pediatric valve developed with help by a team from Boston Children’s Hospital will soon be undergoing ex vivo tests.
