A new headphone technology from Plextek can detect the early signs of tinnitus, allowing for immediate treatment.
Currently, tinnitus is diagnosed by an audiologist in a clinical setting. To help make the procedure both more convenient and affordable, the Plextek technology is meant to be incorporated into a standard pair of headphones.
With the help of a laptop and USB audio card, the system was able to measure changes in AEPs, auditory evoked potentials, which are sent by the brain in response to auditory stimulus. These small changes can be used to detect the onset of tinnitus, and the ease of the system would allow an at-risk individual to test themselves each day.
