An innovative new printing technique that uses sound waves to print with droplets could have applications ranging from food to optical materials.
While printing with liquid droplets, such as creating medicines or in inkjet printers, is a standard technology, the method is only compatible with liquids that are ten times more viscous than water. To reduce that limitation, the team from Harvard created what they call acoustophoretic printing, which relies on a highly confined acoustic field to ‘pluck’ the droplets from the printer nozzle when they reach the desired size. The droplets can be much more viscous than was previously possible, opening the door to new uses for the technology.
