Remora System Prevents Ghost Nets

Remora System Prevents Ghost Nets
Dec-02-14
Created to help prevent ghost nets and reduce plastic waste, the Remora system helps fisherman find and repair fishing nets that have been lost at sea.

The Remora system was developed to reduce the number of animals that die each year as bycatch in fishing nets, and to avoid adding to the 'plastic soup' floating in the ocean. The two-part system consists of a biodegradable net that will eventually break down in seawater, attached tags embedded with RFID chips, an RFID reader and a smartphone app. The tags would monitor the net's integrity and location, allowing fishermen to either find and repair the nets or choose to declare them lost, upon which they could be collected by an agency like Healthy Seas or left to decompose if they cannot be located.
