Robotic Fish Influences Fish Behavior

Robotic Fish Influences Fish Behavior
Nov-09-17
Researchers have created a robotic fish able to blend in so well, it can influence a school of real fish.

Developed by a team at EPFL, the robotic fish was designed to function as a sort of “secret agent” able to infiltrate the schools of fish. The zebrafish-lookalike was attached to an engine at the base of the tank, which pulled it through the water. As the robofish was exposed to real fish, the system learned how to better mimic their swimming motions.

In tests on schools of zebrafish, the robofish integrated well with the real fish, even influencing the school’s swimming behavior.
