Samarth Wheelchair Mechanism Eases Caretaker Burden

Samarth Wheelchair Mechanism Eases Caretaker Burden
Sep-14-18
The Samarth assistive mechanism eases the burden on caregivers by making it easier to shift wheelchair users between mediums.

Developed by IIT Delhi students Amit Kumar and Rituparna Guha, the Samarth wheelchair features a modified wheel system that allows for more flexible positioning and a mechanism that flips the armrest out to create a built-in transfer board. The Samarth design can also be attached to conventional wheelchairs, and the armrest/transfer board can be rotated to function as a table.

The team, who won a James Dyson award for their prototype design, now plans to investigate new materials and mechanisms to make the device simple and more modular.
