Screw-Shaped Wind Turbine Could Appeal to Homeowners

Screw-Shaped Wind Turbine Could Appeal to Homeowners
May-29-14
The Liam F1 wind turbine boasts a unique screw-shape that could make it the first big step toward commercializing turbines suitable for household use.

Based on the shape of the nautilus shell and the screw pump invented by Archimedes, the turbine blades' unique shape allows them to spin with very little mechanical resistance. This reduces the noise and also keeps them pointing into the wind, increasing efficiency, while its small size ensures it can fit comfortably on the roof of a house.

According to the developers, the Liam F1 can generate an average of 1500 kilowatt-hours of energy in a five mph wind, about enough energy to meet one-half of a household's average demand.
