Sea Urchin-Inspired Claw Could Collect Martian Soil

Sea Urchin-Inspired Claw Could Collect Martian Soil
May-06-16
A robotic claw inspired by the shape of the sea urchin could soon be traveling to other planets to collect soil samples.

Developed by a team from the University of California, the claw includes a key feature that contributes to the impressive strength of the sea urchin—a T-shaped structure called the keel. By incorporating this design into the claw, the team was able to create a claw both strong and precise enough to gather ground samples without disturbing the surrounding area.
