A smart, self-healing circuitry repair mechanism able to locate and repair broken circuits could be particularly useful in satellites and other space-based equipment.
The technology, created by teams from the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore and the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center in Trivandrum, India, is in the form of an "add-on" mechanism made up of conductive particles held within a drop of insulating silicon oil. This mixture would remain in place until a break in the circuit occurs, causing an electric field to develop in the gap that triggers the solution to begin moving toward it. As the polarized particles in the solution line up in the gap, they create an arrangement that bridges the break and reinstates the connection.
