Snake-Like Robot Could Assist During Surgery

Snake-Like Robot Could Assist During Surgery
Nov-01-16
Researchers at Vanderbilt have been working on slender, flexible surgical robots that can maneuver in tight spaces while actually assisting with the surgery.

Developed with the goal of furthering minimally invasive surgeries, the snake-like robots are able to sense their environment—detecting when they make contact with an obstacle and adjusting automatically. According to bioengineer Nabil Simaan, who has been leading the team, the self-adjusting robots are more nimble than current versions, going beyond simple manipulation to actually help the surgeon understand and achieve the task.
