Spine-Inspired Flexible Battery Promises Best Performance to Date

Spine-Inspired Flexible Battery Promises Best Performance to Date
Feb-05-18
A flexible battery inspired by the human spine could have applications in wearable tech and bendable displays.

Developed by a team from Columbia University, the battery stands out from other flexible prototypes in its high energy density and stable voltage regardless of how much it twisted or flexed. The battery gets its unique abilities from its series of solid, energy-storage modules separated by “flexibility providers” that allow the device to bend without affecting performance.

Though still in the prototype phase, the battery can offer about 85 percent of energy density compared to standard, solid lithium ion batteries—the highest level achieved by flexible batteries to date.
