Stent Coating Prevents Thrombi

Stent Coating Prevents Thrombi
Aug-19-15
A new gel coating for vascular grafts that prevents blood from clotting could eliminate the need for heart patients to take blood thinning drugs.

Treating heart disease with artificial blood vessels is a common practice now, but these vascular grafts can often cause thrombi to develop, requiring the patient to take blood thinning medications. As an alternative to daily doses of medication, a team from the ITMO University in Russia created a thrombolytic sol–gel coating for vascular stents that will attract plasmin, an enzyme produced by the body that will dissolve fibrin clots. The coating, based on the technology of drug entrapping, ensures the medication is not dispersed into the bloodstream while also giving the graft a virtually limitless lifespan.
