A floating film made of calcium carbonate could help reduce coral bleaching.
High water temperature and intense sunlight both contribute to coral bleaching. To help reduce this damage to the coral, a team from the University of Melbourne and the Australian Institute of Marine Science created a one-molecule-thick, biodegradable film made of calcium carbonate—the same material that makes up coral. The film is designed to float on the surface of the water, over the coral, where it will help block the harsh sunlight that leads to bleaching.
Though it is not possible to cover the entire Barrier Reef with the film, the team believes it could be used to protect high-risk areas.
