Tactile Tablet Displays Landmarks for the Visually Impaired

Tactile Tablet Displays Landmarks for the Visually Impaired
May-17-17
A smart tablet able to represent landforms and locations could provide a tactile map for the visually impaired.

Developed by a team from EPFL as part of the Blindpad project, the table is made up of 192 buttons able to move up or down in a fraction of a second to create a tactile map of a street, building interior, or even a single room. Individual buttons can vibrate to indicate a specific location, and users can also zoom in on the map to explore areas in detail.
