Temporary Tattoo Tracks Blood Alcohol Levels

Temporary Tattoo Tracks Blood Alcohol Levels
Aug-03-16
A new temporary tattoo invention from the University of California can track blood alcohol levels and transmit the information to a paired device.

The flexible sensor can be applied to the skin like a temporary tattoo, where it will track and transmit the wearer’s blood alcohol levels within fifteen minutes of application.

The tattoo is equipped with electrodes coated in alcohol oxidase and a small hydrogel patch filled with pilocarpine—a drug used to induce sweat and saliva. When the wearer’s sweat contacts the electrodes, a chemical reaction creates hydrogen peroxide, which is then translated to electrical signals. That data is then sent wirelessly to a paired device in order to determine the wearer’s blood alcohol content.
