Testing for HIV with a USB Stick

Testing for HIV with a USB Stick
Nov-10-16
A new HIV test based on a USB stick could help patients with the disease monitor their viral levels.

Developed by researchers from Imperial College London and the spinout company DNA Electronics, the USB stick device is equipped with a mobile phone chip and a sensor able to detect HIV in blood and trigger an acidity change. This change in acidity is transformed by the chip into an electric signal that can be displayed as results when the USB stick is inserted into a computer.

Besides offering a quick way to test for the virus, the USB device could also make it easier for HIV patients to monitor their treatment effectiveness by tracking their viral levels.
