The ePhos Reclaims Fertilizer from Wastewater

The ePhos Reclaims Fertilizer from Wastewater
Jun-11-16
The ePhos reactor from the team at Fraunhofer is able to harvest fertilizer from wastewater for use in agriculture.

The ePhos system was designed to meet the growing demand for phosphate-based fertilizers and does not rely on the additions of salt or lye. Instead, the ePhos uses an electrochemical process, which extracts the nitrogen and phosphorus to create struvite (magnesium ammonium phosphate) or potassium struvite. In tests, the market-ready system has been able to recover about 85 percent of the phosphorous, and the team is working on a module that would allow the device to recover ammonium as well.
