The i Gel Personal Airbag System

The i Gel Personal Airbag System
Feb-12-15
Inspired by the hedgehog, the i Gel protective system would protect the wearer from impacts with a system of individual, nitrogen-activated airbags.

The project, headed by trauma surgeon Dr. Wolfgang Müller-Adam, would feature up to 20 individual airbags that would inflate upon impact and cause the wearer to roll into an airbag-covered fetal position. An array of MEMS smart sensors would trigger the airbags to inflate when an impact is detected, and Müller-Adam is also researching ways to use long-distance sensors to allow the system to inflate before the crash actually occurs.

The i Gel is still in the rough concept stage, and Dr. Müller-Adam currently seeking partners and venture capital to make the product a reality.
