A new optical lens for smartphones can magnify images by a magnitude of 120, offering a low-cost alternative for clinics as well as classroom use.
Created by a team from the University of Houston, the lens can attach directly to the smartphone lens without any extra accessories—just a bit of adhesive. The process for making the lens is also simplified: molds and grinding have been replaced with creating computer-controlled droplets of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), a common substance that dries with an excellent lens curvature. The curvature of the lens is controlled by the amount of heat applied, with no other mechanism required.
