Toothbrushing Simulator Could Improve Toothbrush Design

Toothbrushing Simulator Could Improve Toothbrush Design
Mar-08-16
The team at Fraunhofer has created a virtual brushing simulator that could lead to better toothbrushes—and less cavities.

The key to an efficient toothbrush is a design that will scrape away the biological film that forms on our teeth without also removing the enamel in the process. In contrast to previous testing methods, which relied on artificial teeth and time-consuming practice brushings, the new simulator can test different parameters—such as type of toothpaste and the brushing technique—while also evaluating them individually. This allows the toothbrush designers to determine which characteristics are contributing to the most efficient cleaning, and engineer the brush accordingly.
