A low-cost turbidity tracker made using a standard fitness tracker offers gold-standard results in real-time and for less money.
Continuously monitoring bacteria growth in the lab is an integral part of research, and is usually carried out by large spectrophometers that cannot offer real-time results.
As an alternative, the tracker created by researchers from Cork, Ireland, takes advantage of an off-the-shelf heart rate monitor and a 3D-printed holder that allows an LED to shine through the sample. By measuring the amount of light coming through the sample, the system can measure the turbidity of the solution in real time with the same gold-level standard of accuracy as a benchtop spectrophotometer.
