Ultrasound Drill Targets Blood Clots

Ultrasound Drill Targets Blood Clots
Jun-16-17
A straight-shooting ultrasonic drill combines two approaches to offer a new way to blast blood clots.

Current treatments for blood clots involve using either sonic pulses (which can also damage the blood vessel) or diamond-tipped drills (which requires the patient take blood thinner medications.) To overcome the disadvantages of the therapies, the new treatment relies on low-frequency ultrasound pulses that are sent directly toward the clot, reducing damage to the vein while still completely destroying the clot—eliminating the need for follow-up blood thinners.
