The Vibrating Auditory Stimulator converts low-frequency audio signals into vibrations to help counter the ‘cocktail effect.’

The Vibrating Auditory Stimulator was created by an international team led by Dr. Amir Amedi to help the hearing impaired differentiate between voices in a crowd. Still in the proof-of-concept phase, the low-cost device will deliver tactile feedback corresponding to low-frequency audio that can be felt through the user’s fingertips—allowing the brain access to two sensory feeds.

According to the team, volunteers using the device reported a six-decibel improvement in perceived volume, which the researchers hope to increase to ten-decibels.
