Virtual Dressing Room Reduces Need for Actual Stores

Virtual Dressing Room Reduces Need for Actual Stores
Jul-12-14
Urban Research's Wearable Clothing dressing room lets users try on clothing virtually, without needing to actually enter the store.

The virtual dressing room can be installed in any place that has electricity and WiFi access, and the developers hope to eventually see the unit installed in areas like train stations and airport terminals. The technology, called 'tryvertising,' is already popular in Japan, where some of the early trials have taken place. Urban Research hopes the Wearable Clothing unit will allow them to expand their sales without needing to open new retail spaces.

The system works by using a Kinect sensor along with a 60-inch LCD display and an iPad. It is able to respond instantly to the user's movements as they try on the clothing, and the developers claim that the system can even provide a virtual experience of the clothing's texture. Once an item has been selected, the shopper can use a printed QR code to access the item at the online store and complete the purchase.
