Vitamin-Based Battery Offers Non-Toxic Alternative

Vitamin-Based Battery Offers Non-Toxic Alternative
Aug-05-16
An innovation in battery technology that relies on cathodes made from vitamins could lead to a new generation of eco-friendly batteries.

Developed by a team of chemists from the University of Toronto, the vitamin-based battery uses flavin from the B2 vitamin as its cathode. The team created the bio-derived polymer using genetically modified fungi and a semi-synthetic process to produce a long-chain backbone molecule that offers a capacity similar to standard materials, such as lithium cobalt oxide, but without the toxic byproducts generated during processing.
