The Water Watcher tracks water use in real time by measuring it as it flows into the sink and sending the data to a smartphone app.
While many people are aware of the importance of conserving water, it is difficult to keep track of how much water is actually being used. To simplify the process, the Water Watcher attaches to the incoming water line that leads to the sink, tub or toilet and monitors the water leaving the tap with a flow sensor. A companion smartphone app keeps track of water use by representing each gallon with a series of rings.
One key to the design is its subtlety. According to creative director Dan Saffer: "We spent a lot of time trying to make it ambient, in the background, but still observable. In your house, you just don't want something nagging you to save water all the time."
