Harvesting Solar Energy: Hydrogen production by a semi-artificial photo-system

The Invention An artificial ferredoxin-hydrogenase fusion enzyme has been developed for the production of hydrogen gas. This novel fusion enzyme will interfere with the formation of the naturally occurring ferredoxin-sugar production pathway in the photosystem I (PSI) complex and shuttle the donated electrons directly to the hydrogenase. Expression of this novel fusion enzyme in photosynthetic organisms will efficiently generate hydrogen gas under oxygenic photosynthesis conditions. Potential Applications
• Alternative fuel Advantages
• Solar
• Green
• Renewable
Stage The ferredoxin - hydrogenase fusion enzyme has been constructed and expressed in E. coli and evidence of electron transfer has been demonstrated.
