"America's Most Wired Colleges," p. 96)In response to over 52 online calendars scattered across the Northwestern University web site, Plan-It Purple was developed to be the single web site where information about all Northwestern events could be found. Multiple university users can input events into an institution-wide online calendar. The calendar can be viewed by multiple users simultaneously, and is customizable in order that users can see all types of events or only certain types of events.
The real power of this solution is in its integration. Event information is entered only once. Multiple University departments can enter event information that is put to a common database. Both the University-wide web page and individual departmental web pages draw upon the common database to present event information. Individual departments can create calendars either in unique formats or in formats provided by Plan-It Purple templates. Once new event data is added to the common database, individual web pages effected by the new event data are updated automatically. In this manner, a web page can be constructed once, with its contents changing automatically as new event data is posted. This works because web pages are maintained dynamically, such that sections of web pages are "tagged" to event data located in a common database. The same information is maintained at a single source, and automatically displayed on a variety of web pages in a variety of formats without the need to alter web page construction as data is updated.
