Pressure Vessel Flex Joint (MSC-21748)

Abstract:
The technology could be used for undersea vessels and large vacuum systems where one vessel must move with respect to another part of the system. Also, pressurized vessels in process industries, such as oil refineries, could benefit from this design in applications where pressurized gases are handled or where thermal motion occurs because the flex joint allows for temperature variations, achieves angular motion and lateral displacement, and achieves axial loading capacity. Initial prototype testing was successful. The technology is currently under further development.

This technology opportunity is part of the NASA Technology Transfer Program, the goal of which is to stimulate development of commercial applications of NASA-developed technology. NASA is seeking industrial partners to continue the testing efforts and license the technology for commercialization.
